iImprov - Chord/Scale Compendium

Overview

The iImprov - Chord/Scale Compendium is an easy to use reference app that provides a visual and audio representation of the most useful scale to chord choices for jazz improvisation.

In addition to being a great reference, iImprov -Chord/Scale Compendium is also a valuable ear training tool for learning the different scale and chord colors.

The app organizes 25 different chord qualities into three families: Major, Minor, and Dominant. When a specific chord quality is selected, that chord is displayed in standard notation along with a key selection wheel. Depending on the chord, from 1 to 5 scales are recommended. The Fast Forward button cycles through these recommendations, and the Play button plays the currently selected chord and scale. For ease of recognition, the chords are displayed in close position (stacked 3rds), but the chord is sounded with a more practical voicing that might be encountered in a playing situation.

As with other apps from JazzAppsMoblie, bass or treble clef can be selected, as well as the appropriate transposition for your instrument.

All scales and chords may be presented in any key.

Pros and cons of iImprov-Chord/Scale Compendium app for iPhone and iPad

iImprov-Chord/Scale Compendium app good for

Great n easy tool to figure out the notes and scales of Jazz chords. And listen to it. Im finding this very helpful
Ive played by ear almost all my life with a tad bit of formal training. This app fills all the gaps and gives you a guide to Pandoras box! Great app! I recommend this app to any musician looking to unlock your potential. Easy navigation too! Backing tracks to practice to, bpm control, options to change the key of each example. Kudos to developers.

Some bad moments

Needs loop and tempo feature so that you could practice along with the scales
I play both trumpet and piano, and this app really helps to not only learn the structure of nearly every chord out there, but its also just a fantastic way to aurally "fish" for chords, searching for the kind of flavor I need when doing improv. Good stuff!
My director Edward Freytag recommended this app because the creator is a former student of his. Man, this cat made a great resource. Even if you arent a jazz musician or an someone trying to improv, this is an all around amazing tool to access music theory. Thanks for this man!
This app is great if you can read music but if youre like me (and a lot of other folks) and rely on tab, dont waste your money. Im guessing the rest of the apps by these guys are the same. No tab!
Very useful. For those complaining about this app not having guitar tabs.....learn how to read music. Tabs have made guitar players dumber.
If you want a reality based music education 1) Learn to read music 2) Learn relationships between chords and scales and 3) Practice. This is simply an accurate, inexpensive tool.
